Abstract

I argue that the nature of marriage entailed by the ethical standpoint in Kierkegaard’s Either/Or differs in important ways from the metaphysics of marriage of the German idealist J. G. Fichte. Hence claims in recent scholarship that Fichte was the historical model for Kierkegaard’s ethical standpoint in Either/Or should be examined in light of these differences.
